EMMANUEL - A short three-act for Christmas. Where do we find hope in the midst of chaos?
The Christmas narrative we all know and love centers around a baby in a manger—Jesus. The prophet Isaiah announced that this baby, this child, would be “Emmanuel.” At the moment Jesus was born, the divine nature became tangible—God was no longer “in heaven” but was now – with – us.
God being with us doesn’t change the circumstances around us. Mary’s boy-child was born in a shed where animals sheltered, and his first bed was made of smelly, scratchy hay. His birth didn’t change the smelliness, the scratchiness, or the humbleness of the setting. But his birth transformed the lives of those around him – the shepherds who left their flocks to see him, and then ran running through the town shouting his praise; the mysterious kings who journeyed thousands of miles to give him their most costly possessions; his disciples and followers; and countless Christians down through the ages.
No, God being with us may not change our chaotic twenty-first century fast-paced situations—but experiencing His presence will transform US. This drama demonstrates the power of encountering Emmanuel - God With Us -- in everyday situations.
CAST - three women, 1 man (can be changed as needed)
Premiere performance: Arlington First Church of the Nazarene, December 2012
